The Happy Witch – Fin
It’s that time again. I’ll be working on a picture, not as complex as last time, and will be focusing mostly on the coloring. Hopefully, you will see an update from me every couple of days, depending on how motivated I am.
Once again, I begin with a sketch.
Yes. It’s quite horrid. I’m mostly putting my ideas down on “paper” to get a physical sense of things. Once I figure it’s worth drawing, on to the next step.
Another sketch.

I started with a nice light brown background, and fleshed out another sketch with some darker brown. Black and white is so 90’s. And besides, I want to avoid using heavy lines in the the final product. Therefore, it’s better overall if I avoid sketching with high contrast. As you can see, the pose has changed. I changed the feet to fit the “feel” of the picture. Since her upper body seems so genki, it’s only right that her feet are happy as well. I’ve never really drawn big floppy hats in the wind, so hopefully this is a good enough of a representation.
06/10 – So now I’ve started to fix up the lines. I was originally thinking I would just paint over everything, but it I caved in and decided to add some solid lines. While doing so, I’ve been correcting some oddities and drawing her parts on different layers. (arms, hat, face, etc…)
06/12 – Argh! I hate drawing feet. If the perspective is off by a few degrees along any of the 3 axes, the foot ends up looking disjointed. I’ll… fix it later.
06/16 – I think I’m done with the lineart. I’m more or less satisfied with the foot, and the cape part doesn’t make too much sense, but I think it won’t get any better. I think it’s time to add some color. The whole carrot thing was a spur of the moment thing. Why not, right?
Plopped some colors in. I think I have a terrible design sense. Feel free to give me color suggestions!
06/17 – As odd as it is, I’ve decided she’ll be flying around in the daytime, mostly to make coloring easier for me. I thought the purple was a bit harsh, so I made it a less angry color. Pastel colors seemed like the way to go.
SHADOWS! I’m quite convinced now that I simply have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to shading anything besides skin. I think I should simply cel-shade everything. Bleh. I imagine there’s some sun in front of her, but my shading is wonky even with that knowledge.
06/19 – I’ve done a little more cleanup and strengthened some shadows. I’ve also plopped in some clouds, meaning that I’ve begun to lose my interest in continuing this piece. Heh.
06/29 – In the end, I’ve proven to myself that I don’t ever really know what I’m doing. I gave her some horrendous makeup, and finished adding lighting effects that couldn’t possibly exist. Regardless, I think I’m finished and I prolly won’t be working on another one until my self-disgust fades. Hope you enjoyed my downward spiral.
