So, I’ve always wanted to have a giant exercise wheel set up in my home. That seemed easy enough to do.
Then I figured, if I was badass enough, I could prolly use the wheel to propel me to the 2nd floor as well. Maybe some weight sensors can detect when I rise higher than the midpoint, and kick in some gears to slow it down to a manageable level where I could roll out without being squished like a tube of toothpaste.
I guess the main problem for this is the size of the thing. A regular exercise wheel where one could walk within doesn’t need to be that much taller than a normal person. Getting to the next floor via wheel, I figure would require at least a 15 foot diameter wheel and perhaps larger.
If I ever get down to the first step, I’ll aim for the second. As soon as I have a multistory building to do as I wish.
also if you could hook it up to a turbine generator, our energy problems are solved as well!!
Mmm, it’ll need to be heavy enough that the momentum will keep it going when you stop to reach the second floor. Hrm. And not too heavy that it’s impossible to get going.
Your circle is backwards though? If he’s running to the right of the page, the wheel will be rotating clockwise (and he should be swept clockwise by the wheel), so the ideal exit point would be about 2-3 o’clock on the wheel.
Oooh, I know. Instead of roll/jumping out on the second floor, once sufficient speed has been reached, you could just lean forward, grab hold of the wheel as you go, feet first. So as you start to come back down, you’re positioned the upright, making jumping off easier. (Or just have a portion of the floor stick out into the wheel, effectively scraping you off the thing. Might hurt if you don’t let go in time though. Heh heh heh, ow.)
Isn’t that wheel going the wrong way?
Anyway, screw the wheel. Just leave a giant gap between the two floors in the ceiling. And JUMP to the second level from standing still. Rhino hamstrings FTW.
Shoot, you guys are right. I’m stupid.
I could always try to produce a wheel that spins in one direction only, so as long as I achieve enough height, I could propel myself up a side without having to worry about rolling back down.
I figure hamsters can make a loop around, so there should be an ideal wheel weight for us to be able to make the rounds as well.
cat wheels are hundreds of dollars. this may be a lot of money. maybe catwheelcompany.com can do something for people.
Heh, cat wheels.
a two floor hamster wheel? meh. I wanna see the design plans for a three floor wheel. Or maybe it’d be two independent wheels to go 1st -> 2nd and then 2nd -> 3rd.
I always figure I’d need to rig up a dynamo, or some other mechanism to slow the descent when it spins back down. Otherwise I’d always get sliced in half as I attempt the jump. I don’t know if I could manage that with 3 floors.
