Paradise Lost

Paradise Lost

Went on a short trip with a couple friends to Oahu, one of the Hawaiian islands. When I was asked what I’d like to do, I responded: “My only goal is to get a drink served in a coconut with a small paper umbrella in it.”

A strange desire perhaps, especially for someone who hadn’t been to Hawai’i before, but it wasn’t strange to me. I’d always seen TV and movie depictions of vacations at some tropical sunny island, where some dude would sit at the beachfront drinking one of ‘those’ drinks. I wanted to live that experience. See an volcano? Meh. Go scuba driving and see exotic sea life? pfft. I wanted my damn coconut drink.

Of all the trips where you would imagine having such a beverage, apparently my trip to Hawai’i wasn’t one of them. Odd, seeing as they grow all around the island.

Hawaiian vacation ruined.

And global paper umbrella shortages.
